Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith in DLP

So today I ended up seeing Star Wars twice - and both experiences are totally different.

The first time I saw it at a regular theatre on Shoreline courtesy of my employer at around noon. The second time it was with friends at a DLP theatre in the evening.

Wow. DLP rocks.

I had seen a movie on DLP before, but I guess I had never seen the same movie practically back to back to compare them. And this time, the difference was quite noticable.

The DLP had much richer colors (though sometimes looked a bit cartoony/cg because of it) and things just went smoother since they didn’t have to switch reels. There was also no dust, and the sound seemed better too.

Definitely cool.

And of course, the evening crowd was quite different than the afternoon crowd! :) A lot more laughing, a lot more fun. Unfortunately though we waited 2+ hours to get seats, we still sat like 4 rows from the front - compare that to getting to the theatre 25 minutes before at the noon showing and getting roughly the same seats!

Wonderful to see great comments abt DLP as someone working for TI! DLP is way ahead of any other technology and it is certainly nice to know that there is one in the Bay Area!

Is the DLP projector at Century 22 one of the state of the art ones with 3 DMD chips?

btw there have been 2 in the Bay Area for a long time, one in Emeryville — Bay Street 16 — and one in San Francisco — Metreon. I know the one in San Francisco has been upgraded to the 3 chip version, not sure about San Jose.

It is definitely cool that we have it in Silicon Valley now, at long last.

I used to be a movie theater projectionist, and let me tell you, that job is a big pain in the [expletive deleted]. To add insult to injury, because they weren’t doing well, they cut people’s hours back, and I was working one day a week at one point, so I quit. So yeah DLP is a great idea, it will save millions of dollars and make the industry more efficient, resulting in better movies and more movies.

    Later…
