Windows Text Editors

I’m looking for a Text Editor for Windows that can come close to BBEdit.

One feature I would like is the ability to use FTP from the text editor - that is, I can open and save files using FTP. Preferably SFTP!

I found one that could sort of do that recently (FTP, not SFTP), but the app constrains all its windows to the master window. (Like PowerPoint, unlike Word.) Argh! I hate when apps do that. That’s so Windows 3.1!

Do you have any favorite text editors to recommend?

I use SuperEdi because it’s free, light-weight and simple. It’s very lacking on things such as syntax highlighting, but other than that, it’s “good enough”(TM). It has non-secure FTP support, although I’ve never tried it since I use rsync for that.

    I’d suggest UltraEdit, http://www.ultraedit.com
UE does FTP/SFTP and has all the other editing good-bits one would expect. Payware, but worth it.

OTOH, you might look into Emacs on Windows, if you’re comfortable with Emacs.

You can also checkout EditPlus - http://www.editplus.com, really nice light weight editor and doesn’t cost much.

    jedit
    jedit.org

tons of great plug-ins including exactly what your asking for and a lot more I can’t live without it. First thing I do onsite is grab jedit and my macro’s off my server to do anything.

Before I moved to OS X I used NoteTab Pro on Windows. Great application that makes BBEdit look like a rip off! It is only $20.00 and you can download it to try it out first.
