Washington DC Union Station has free WiFi

Woot, Washington DC Union Station seems to have free wifi at Gate F. It’s labelled linksys1.

I wonder if it is legit…

More on the $400k condos - Charles Village Lofts

Some people couldn’t believe that they were selling condos for $400,000 on St. Paul St - 1 block over from the Hopkins campus. Here is a photo of the sign:

You can go their website, but there’s really not much there. $400,000! That’s almost as expensive as the Bay Area!

It looks like all the row houses across the street have been condemned… That should make the neighborhood far nicer once they are destroyed and rebuilt! But until then, down the street and around the corner, is the old Pike frat house:

Yipes!

Microsoft at the Johns Hopkins Career Fair

Whew! Boy am I tired. I spent most of today at the Johns Hopkins Career Fair, helping people learn more about Hopkins.

Even though it was just the 4th week of school, there were a surprising number of Freshman who were interested in getting an internship at Microsoft - talk about being eager! I was still finding my way around campus at that point! And thanks to Michael and Ilya, I know a lot more about the internship program than I ever did (for example: it pays shockingly well!)

Here is a picture of the fantastic venue for this event:

The glass pav was nicer, but this was far more practical and more spacious.

Here is a picture of the booth the Microsoft booth was next to:

I tried asking them for some free missiles, but instead I got a pen. Close enough.

Here is a picture of the Microsoft booth once it was set up:

Here is a picture of the Microsoft booth, Mike, Ilya, and some students:

Overall, I’d have to say this event was a success. We met with a number of great candidates, help spread awareness of Microsoft, and gave away a huge number of copies of Microsoft OneNote (the full product) to help everyone take notes more effectively!

Later in the day, we had an information session where we entertained 70 with free pizza, some slides, a funny video feature Ed Helms, and a raffle where we gave away Office 2003, Visual Studio, and some xBox games. Wow… the 20 pizzas we ordered sure disappeared quickly! Heck, I don’t think any of us got a slice!

I hope all the people we met today are excited at the career opportunities at Microsoft!

Johns Hopkins beefs up security around the AMR dorms

It’s amazing how much The Johns Hopkins University has changed since I was last here - even since May! As a result of the number of deaths at the school in the last 2 years, JHU has really stepped up its security efforts. While not quite Columbia University, yet, check out the changes in just 4 months.

Here is a picture of AMR 1 (a freshman residential dorm) back in May:

This is what it looks like today:

Here is a picture of AMR 2 (another freshman residential dorm) back in May:

This is what it looks like today:

What’s ironic is that none of the deaths in the last few years were actually in these dorms - this seems more like a CYA (cover your ass) measure more than one of real sense. It’s kind of sad in a way because these two areas used to be really free for people to hang out and roam, and we all know that once you add measures like this, they never go away.

A classic case of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t”.

On a positive side, I must say that the security improvements along St. Paul street were fantastic. Security presence was constantly visible. I’d never felt safer going to Eddie’s Market.

Maybe if this had existed back in 1997, my roommate Mike wouldn’t have been a victim of “agressive panhandling” (or as most reasonable people would call it, “getting mugged”).

Housing Bubble in Baltimore Too?

Charles Village Projects: East Side St. Paul Street

SBE&R has also begun selling condominiums for Village Lofts. Interest is high in owning a home in Charles Village, one of Baltimore’s best neighborhoods. If you or friends or family are interested, please contact us today.

I walked by this today - the sign says that they are 1-2 bedroom condos, and that they start at $400,000.

$400,000 for a 1 bedroom condo that’s block away from Hopkins? I know the area is picking up… but still, that’s crazy in my opinion. That’s almost Bay Area pricing!

Airport Car Service from Sunnyvale to SFO - rates are crazy

This Wednesday I’m flying to Baltimore. I called to reserve a ride from Sunnyvale to SFO.

Here is the cost structure apparently:
-$75 base fee
-$10 early morning fee
-$? airport fee (I forgot)
-$? tip (variable)

If I’m not mistaken, this 30 mile ride to SFO airport on Wednesday morning will be ~$100 dollars.

Something is terribly broken about this. Sadly its more expensive than New York - which further goes to show how expensive it is to live in the Bay Area.

Delete a song from the iPod Nano

Is it just me or can you not delete a song from an iPod nano using solely the device?
