Delete a song from the iPod Nano

Is it just me or can you not delete a song from an iPod nano using solely the device?

  1. S?ren Kuklau Says:

That is correct. You cannot delete or modify songs from an iPod using the iPod itself. The iPod is designed as a satellite device for your computer, not as a tool on its own. Amongst the few things you can do on the iPod that will actually get back to your computer are rating songs and increasing their play count adding songs to on-the-go playlists. There’s not much beyond that.

Why would you need to delete a song?

  2. Dennis T Cheung Says:

I could’ve sworn that this was possible on some of the 4th gen iPod. Maybe I was just smoking crack again.

  3. Todd Dailey Says:

I could’ve sworn that this was possible on some of the 4th gen iPod.

Not as far as I know.

    Two strategies:
    - Add the song to an “on the go” playlist. (Just hold down the center button for a few seconds to do this.) Delete the songs in this playlist later.
    - (Better strategy, IMO.) While listening to the song, press the center button until you get to the rating screen. Rate the song one star. Regularly delete music rated one star from your iTunes library.

i jsut bought an ipod nano (2 GB). It has 1.61 GB of songs on it ( only 39 songs??!! what happened ?!) . I want to get rid of those 39 songs and start over. I have 1.8 GB of songs in my library and it says the ipod doesnt have enough room to update .. help ?

  5. MSilbys Says:

Download the apple ipod updater.. it will give you 2 options.. reset to factory or update.. rest will bring it back to the condition that which you got it

  6. Bill Sanders Says:

open itunes. then go to edit preferences and go to the ipod tab. then change it to manually enter new music. and then you can go to the song and right click and clear the song, and it will be deleted.

Sometimes i need the full capacity of my ipod to use it as a pendrive to storage information. The only way i know to delete the songs without installing itunes in my frind’s computer is downloading yamipod. With this program you can download the ipod music and delete them also. The best is that you don’t need to instal yamipod. Great http://www.yamipod.com

  13. Anthony Says:

Well, I think its crazy not to let you delete a song because maybe you don’t care for the song anymore and with new songs coming out you may want it replaced!

  14. Cindi Says:

It is possible to delete songs from your iPod.
Just use your iPod preferences, switch it to Manually Update. Reconnect your iPod. Then click your iPod under the Sources part on the right of your iTunes window. You will be able to select the songs.
Right click and select clear. Be careful not to delete songs you want to keep.
After you’re done, disconnect and RESET to be safe.
Sorry if this doesn’t work for ya.

  21. Jesaree Says:

i let my siste borrow my ipod. when i got it back i got ‘on-the-go 1′. now i have 2 ‘on-the-go’. is it possible to delete that from your ipod or do you have to go to your computer to delete it. can you delete it at all? i’m at work, and that ‘on-the-go 1′ is annoying the crap out of me. thanks.

  22. LP Says:

I’m new to this, but my Ipod Nano deletes old songs I have when I try to upload new ones. When I went to add songs I unchecked the ones in the library that I already had synced…should I have left them checked?

  23. James McGill Says:

Worse than not letting you delete songs, is when Itunes will delete *everything* on the Ipod without warning, without asking for confirmation, nothing. A write-protect
option would be appropriate! I cannot believe what I just witnessed today. A new Ipod owner, absolutely enchanted with the thing, went to delete a song. Following the instructions on some Apple website, surprise, the Ipod is empty. All the stuff she had put on there the whole first couple of days she owned it, gone without warning. I thought she was going to throw the thing against the wall! (I might have!) Seriously, what kind of storage device doesn’t have some kind of write-protect? What kind of file system deletes *anything* without confirmation from the user, let alone deletes thousands of files, tens of gigabytes!?!?

I thought the Ipod was pretty cool until I saw this. I was going to buy one for myself, along with a Macbook Pro. I’m reconsidering the whole thing now.

I tried right-clicking the iPod icon in iTunes, but the only choices I had where “open/eject/sync/transfer purchases/reset warnings.” Someone help!!! I think that if someone were to go in slow-mo in laymen’s terms, I could get it. I know my way around computers, but this iTunes program is something else!!!

  41. SuperSid Says:

    TO DELETE A SONG:

This worked for me, I have 2gb nano ipod.

Set your iPod to be manually managed. Select your iPod in your iTunes. Under options, there’s a check to “manually manage your iPod” or something like that.

Then click on the triangular icon to the left of your “(name)’s iPod”. It should list the playlists in your iPod. THen click on the playlist of the song that you want to delete, or just click on Music for all the songs. Right click a song and choose “delete” to delete.

It worked for me, hope it works for you too. Good Luck!

Me n my boyfriend bought ipods and we use the same computer…. so whatever i have on my ipod gets automatically added to his ipod when he connects it into my computer. Since we have different taste in music, it really sucks that i have his music on mine and he has my music on hims. Does anyone know how to solve this problem??

  45. mark Says:

with itunes opened/running and your ipod synced/displayed on the left(in manual mode), click on the triangle, a new submenu will form. If they are grey(undeletable) you aren’t on manual.

This drove me nuts as well.

  46. Gene Cowan Says:

What the hell language are people writing these comments in?
Or am I just so old and un-hip that I expect English?

Perhaps the iPod and iTunes should ship with at least rudimentary instruction booklets, because it is obvious that people don’t know how to sync their iPods. You can have as many iPods as you want with your computer, and each will sync with different playlists or songs — if you tell it to.

  62. Sarah Says:

So delete songs all you have to do is go into the Itunes on your computer and open the playlist which you downloaded from. Then you just clear all of the songs out of there. Then plug in your ipod and it will update it automatically and all of the songs will come off and then you just create a new playlist and put all of the songs in you want and update

  63. Gustavo Says:

They´re no stupid… in fact they are very smart. Don´t forget apple was initiallya computer enterprise, so what they do is just use the captive market from ipod to become captive of iTunes, iTunes Store and usage og PCs and laptops… stupid? jeje I thinks is pretty smart!

Has anyone find a way to drag and drop songs from and ipod to another without pasing them thorugh the hard drive?

  64. matthew Says:

LOL WTF ? I could remove songs from my ipod after i restored it..??? there was an extra folder under my ipods name on the libary called music and there was all my songs inside my ipod so i just deleted music from there…

  65. matthew Says:

alright if u ticked SYNC music when u first installed ur ipod to ur computer its BAD it just automatically downloads EVERYTHING in ur itunes to ur ipod, after that u wont be able to delete that is why now i can delete music from my ipod…. i didnt click SYNC MUSIC at the first place… it appears on the bottom when u name ur ipod at first. u can do it if u restore ur ipod XD

I Figured this mother fucker out! READ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right, i got an ipod nano 4GB and somebody left a website link, i went on it and it didnt do SHIT for me.

but i finally figured it out, What ya do is plug ur iPod into your cable and usb into back of computer, wait for itunes to load up okay?
Once on the itunes screen righty click your ipod symbol and “sync” it, wait till that is done, once that is done at the top of the left hand side where is says Library and underneath it says music, movies, tv shows blah blah fuckin blah…. go onto the “Music” tab underneath! the library one, not underneath ur ipod ect…. now the library will show every god dam song on your computer ect ect, just find the ones that are on your ipod that you DONT want, when u find them dont tick or untick them just right click that mofo and click REMOVE, it will ask if your sure you wanna remove it from itunes library click yes, it wont delete of your computer it will ONLY delete it from itunes, once you have gone through the big list one by one removing the songs you dont want on your ipod, right click your ipod symbol again and click “Sync” Once again, allow for it to fully sync, the go onto your music list and search for the songs you didnt want - they should be no longer on your ipod if you did this correctly, do it exactly how i just said and it DOES work, http://www.myspace.com/kikey_boy

  69. Shannon M. Says:

I have had my nano for over a year. I had it plugged to my computer and I added a song before I disconnected it and when disconnect my nano my songs were no longer on my nano. The itunes erased all of my songs but my pictures were still on the nano. Then when I try to plug it in a sign comes up saying “Itunes cannot not read Shannons ipod. Select Summary tab and then preference and restore to factory settings.” Then I hit ok but there isn’t a summary tab anywhere and the weird thing is that my nano shows up on my desktop. I have an apple computer and everything is updated. Does anyone know how I should solve this problem.

  70. gemma Says:

  80. Mishal Says:

You cannot delete songs off your IPod.
    It’s highly impossible.
If you want to delete a song, you might as well accept the fact you have to delete all your songs to delete one song.
    How do I do this:
Well, when you plug your device in your computer, then the ITunes will pop-up on your moniter’s screen. It will say your device’s name (e.g. “Mishal” )

You click that, and then it will have a button called “restore” you click that.
    W A R N I N G : All your data, songs’, and photos’ will be deleted.
    ( For security, on blaming me for giving you the “wrong” information.. I had to put down a paragraph called ” W A R N I N G : ”
    Thank-you for your understanding.
    - Mishal.

I want to delete all of my songs on my ipod how do i do it?

  82. Robert L. Says:

ATTENTION!!!!!!!!!!!! I found a way to delete songs from your ipod,Nano. The only way,it sucks but you have to use a differant computer than the one you always use, when you try to sync from another computer it asks and tells you that “IF YOU WANT TO SYNC ALL PRIOR SONGS,VIDEOS,PICS… WILL BE ERASED AND LOST.” Make sure the library you sync either have songs you like or have no songs at all. That is the only way, you lose all your songs but it will make you be more careful on your selections next time!

  91. Mabo Says:

    Hello all
This has been doin my head in since i bought the damn thing.
Think ive sussed it now though.
The part i was missing was the little grey triangle to the left your ipods name. If you click on that you get a drop down menu. This displays everything that is on your ipod (not neccecerily in your library). All you need to do is click on file and select delete. One thing though you need to have selected manually manage music and videoes from the screen that pops up when you click onto your ipods name. Easy when you know how but what a fart on getting there !!!!!!!!!

  92. K po Says:

To put it simply for all of you out there this is process to delete songs off your ipod:
(**= pay attention or look for this when following the steps)
    1.)Start up iTunes.
    2.)Click on the Ipod icon.
3.)After clicking the icon you should see a list of tabs that say:
    |**Summary**|Music|Movies|Tv Shows|Podcasts|Photos|Contacts|Games|
4.) Click on Summary and move you eyes down until you see “Options”
    Showing:
    - Open iTunes when Ipod is connected (Start up iTunes when Ipod is connected to computer)
    - Sync only checked songs and videos (Add music from library that you have checkmarked)
**- Manually manage music and videos (Manually control what comes in and out of Ipod, like your music <– This is what you want!)
    - Enable disk use (Access your Ipod from Explorer)

For all of you who actually took the time to read this, this is what the link was trying to say.

For Mishal: You can remove music from the ipod, just make sure you have a backup of the file, or song, beforehand so that when you remove it and decide to mess with your settings you can put your music back.

For adding music to the Ipod just follow the procedure above and just drag the music from your library to the Ipod icon.

For a confused Ipod error message: Reset your Ipod back to factory settings, or let the battery die and start it up again. It should recognize it then as a new ipod. Alternatively just reset it using iTunes and put stuff back on it.

For other messages or questions, just ask and you will get your answer.

ok this is pissing me off I have the same song on their 2x the only difference is that the bands name is wrong on one and I want to delete it because it is a waste of space, I have no clue how to delete the song because on the side where it says John’s iPod(my name) when I right click it, it only says eject and when I click it the license agreement comes up, I have already accepted it and saved and it still does that when I click it so can someone help me out

  98. John Says:

If it wasn’t apparent what I meant its that I dont have the drop down menu for the iPod icon

    2.)Click on the Ipod icon.
3.)After clicking the icon you should see a list of tabs that say:
    |**Summary**|Music|Movies|Tv Shows|Podcasts|Photos|Contacts|Games|

That part because the iPod Software Agreement License keeps appearing and I have accepted and saved the file

i wanna delete songs in my ipod nano `cause i got it as a gift 4 x-mas & there were songs in it i didn`t like,SO HOW DO U DELETE SONGS OFF YOUR IPOD!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  104. emina Says:

WANT TO DELETE SELECTED SONGS ON YOUR IPOD? LOOK AT 3RD PARAGRAPH OR SCROLL UP AND SEE SEVERAL OTHER ANSWERS THERE.

I just got my iPod nano today and downloaded iTunes a few hours ago. At first I was having trouble because I couldn’t delete some of the songs but I did a little “exploring” of iTunes and I found out a way to delete the some of the songs I want to delete.

Suprisingly enough, some people here already mentioned several ways of deleting selected songs from the iPod but people are still asking how… I wonder why people take the time to ask when the answers are already there..

Anyways, I just clicked the name of my iPod on the left side (after connecting my iPod to the computer). Then on Options, I checked the box with “Manually Manage Music and Videos”. After that, I clicked on “Music” under the name of my iPod and right-clicked the songs I wanted to delete and clicked “Delete” and then “Remove”.

THERE’S YOUR ANSWER. ALSO, OTHER PEOPLE HERE HAVE DIFFERENT WAYS OF DELETING IT TOO SO YOU MIGHT WANT TO SCROLL UP AND SEE WHAT THEY SAID.

Good day to you all and good luck!

  107. Amanda moran Says:

hi there like some of these other people on the chat my ipod nano 4gb will not delete songs please could you tell me how ?

  108. Amber Says:

YES people you can delete songs…me being a total genius i just figured out how. First, you open itunes. Next, open up your music folder that has the music in it that you want deleted. Click on the song so it is highlighted. Then press backspace that should delete it. For multiple songs press “ctrl” on the keyboard and the click the song and then backspace. Also i’m not sure if this will help or not but plug in your ipod once you have them deleted then look to the left of the screen on itunes and click on below devices where it will have the name of your ipod. It will open a bring up some kind of homepage for your ipod….if you look towards the bottom of the page it will have things checked off. If you have “manually select music and video” deselect it then select “Sync only checked songs and videos” then if you look to the right it will say “apply” click that and give it a couple seconds and now you have officially deleted them from your ipod! YAY!

I’m new to this, but my Ipod Nano deletes old songs I have when I try to upload new ones. When I went to add songs I unchecked the ones in the library that I already had synced…should I have left them checked?

  111. Jessica Says:

Hi If anyone reads this, I need help deleting all the songs off my ipod nano 3g 8gig. I’m really confused. I started deleting a bunch of songs off itunes when my ipod was plugged into my computer and a window popped up saying that if i delete music off itunes, it will also delete it from the ipod. So I cleared itunes completely but all the music is still on my ipod. Did I miss something or what? I’m gonna call apple since they don’t have an email address apparently and see if they can help me. If anyone has the answer to my problem, please email asap! thanks so much!
