What a nerdy apartment complex I live in…

I ran NetStumbler tonight to troubleshoot a problem, and noticed this:

That’s a lot of wireless networks!! And look at how many of them are secured! Talk about a nerdy place! I was in Boston once, and did a scan: there were 6 networks called “linksys” and they were all open. Sheesh.

But what I think is really funny is how people leave them on the default channel of 6. That’s gotta eat into the bandwidth performance.

I must live in a rather low-tech neighborhood — or a security savvy one, because I don’t receive any base station IDs except one. I even keep mine hidden.
The one I do see? It’s labeled as “763poplar”, which turns out to be an address a little more than a half mile away in Santa Clara. What kind of transmitter do these people have that I can receive it here? I mean, I sometimes can’t get a full strength signal from my own base station here in my tiny house!

Given how often people move, i bet they set it and forgot it.

Wow you’re pretty lucky! There are still some unsecure networks you can use when you, ahem, have *troubles* with your current ISP. cough cough
