Secrets of the Motorola DCT6412 DVR (Comcast)
I was reading through the Wikibook for the set-top box that Comcast gave me - the Motorola DCT6412. I finally understand why my unit turns itself off at :00 intervals such as 10:00pm and 11:00pm.

Box turns off by itself
* Cause: Viewing began after box had turned itself on for a scheduled recording. Recording concluded.
* Remedy: None.(Never turn DVR off)
Ah hah!
Here’s my favorite entry on the page:

The picture quality of analog recordings is not very good
* Cause: Motorola has a reputation around the circuitry world for having really bad digital to analog conversion. The digital video recording is made by Motorola and the signal for all analog stations have to go through this converter before appearing on the screen.
* Remedy: Wait til STB stops using Motorola based products.
Ouch! I hope no one ever has to write an entry like that for one of my products!

Hi,
I have the Comcast Motorola DCT3412-I and noticed it has a Firewire plug, (2 actually) on the back. I’d like to add HDD storage space so I can record more HD movies. Do you know if this is possible and if so which drive would work?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Those connections may not be activated by your local cable provider. At Comcast Greater Chicagoland Region, we have these boxes with all the bells and whistle in the back, but the firewire and usb’s are not active, because the software will not support it, cause Comcast does not currently support any of those features for our regular subscribers. Your best bet is to call your cable provider tech help desk, and see if its possable.

That is wrong, they are required by law to have the firewire ports active. They just do not provide drivers to use them. The drivers are floating around net.

‘required by law’

‘required by law’ When this phrase (or variations of) works its way into someone’s statement, you can be certain that person is actually ignorant of the truth. In some circles, this is known as the ‘Donny Baker Syndrome’!

He’s right. It’s written in the “Enabled Firewire Act of 1972″. Several items are required to have an active firewire port. This includes TVs, radios, toasters, household pets and small children.

All new boxes have FireWire ports that let you add external storage, thanks to a federal requirement from 2004.

It is a federal requirement for the digital boxes to have external storage ports, so before you go spouting off and mocking someone; make sure YOU’RE NOT THE IGNORANT one, otherwise you come off as the dickface that you most certainly are.

To further mock, The web address with all the drivers to set up to activly capture video from the box is http://home.comcast.net/~timmmoore/wsb/html/view.cgi-showresources.html-TopRes-STB-20Firewire.html
The instructions on how to do it are http://replayguide.sourceforge.net/dct6412/
I have yet to find a way to copy from the internal HD or to add another HD. When you find that out let me know. This web address also shows you how to access the internal setup to check the status of the ports along with other things, and, I’m not completely sure, but you can switch them on and off as well.

I have a Motorola DVR and I want to know how can I activate the USB ports. I’m losing a lot of stuff since the DVR will not hold too much date specially when you save in HD. I have contacted my cable provider and they confirmed that they are not activated but would not help me in doing so. What do they have to lose?? Can anyone help??
