It’s snowing here in Redmond

Being that I haven’t been to NY for the Winter, or Tahoe in a while, I haven’t seen snow in a while either. I think the last time I saw snow was some remainder of snow in Baltimore last February.

Right now it’s snowing here in Redmond, WA.

Right now it’s pretty light and mixed with rain. I hope it stays that way so my flight doesn’t get canceled! I’m supposed to pick up my car tomorrow (finally).

Update 1: Here’s a terrible picture from my camera phone

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 download

Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 download
Virtual PC 2007 is a powerful software virtualization solution that allows you to run multiple PC-based operating systems simultaneously on one workstation, providing a safety net to maintain compatibility with legacy applications while you migrate to a new operating system. It also saves reconfiguration time, so your support, development, and training staff can work more efficiently.
Virtual PC 2007 runs on: Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Tablet PC, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, and Windows Vista Ultimate. See system requirements.

And best of all, it’s free! I use VPC a lot - especially back when I was doing Toolbar stuff. It can be a real lifesaver sometimes.

Traffic on Valentine’s Day - worse?

Yesterday I was at looking at the traffic map at work at 7pm when I noticed that it seemed worse than usual. Now, there were 2 small non-accidents on 101 - but it got me thinking: was traffic worse because of Valentine’s Day?

Unfortunately I didn’t think of this on 2/13 - but here are 2 screen captures: Valentine’s Day, and V-Day+1:

Unfortunately, the incidents on 101 contaminates the data, but some roads like 680 seem noticably worse.

I’m not sure this proved anything. Did you think traffic was worse than usual?

Hotmail is now… Windows Live Hotmail

Have you heard the news?

Your mail is here, come and get it!: We Heard You Loud and Clear

As we prepare to launch the final version of our new web mail service, we recognize the importance of ensuring that our 260+ million existing customers come over to the new service smoothly and without confusion. By adopting the name “Windows Live Hotmail”, we believe we’re bringing together the best of both worlds – new and old. We’re able to offer the great new technology that Windows Live has to offer while also bringing the emotional connection many existing and loyal users have with Hotmail.

Hotmail is now Windows Live Hotmail - after a brief detour of being Windows Live Mail. Kind of like AT&T Wireless->Cingular->AT&T - but with billions of dollars of ad spend involved. :)

Why do I mention this? Well… since Decemberish, I’ve been working on Windows Live Hotmail, instead of Windows Live Toolbar. This is the first time I’ve worked on an entirely web-based product, and it’s a natural transition looking at where I’ve been so far.

In the M9 release of Windows Live Mail, I worked with Steve Kafka on Import and Export. Here’s what he had to say:

Kafka’s Space: WL Mail - import and export your contacts
But what probably has people more excited is that we added more ways to import contacts and the ability to export your contacts. Check out the options page where you can now import contacts in a number of different CSV file formats (including Yahoo! Mail and Gmail). You’ll also see an option to export your contacts to a CSV file so you can add your WL Mail contacts to Outlook, your phone, or whatever you want. After all, they’re your contacts.

And here’s an obligatory screenshot of what the Import UI looks like:

Give it a try and let me know what you think!

777 Flight Deck Simulation

This is a pretty neat website - it explains to you what nearly every single control does in the cockpit of certain planes - like the 777. Just click, click, click, and click some more until you get a popup that tells you depth what all the settings mean.

Great for plane nerds, like me!
