Hello San Carlos
In the 7 years that I’ve lived in the Bay Area, I’m not sure that I had ever been to San Carlos or Belmont before this year. Well, that’s not true - I’ve been to the REI in San Carlos a lot, but being that that’s practically on 101, I doubt that counts. Redwood City, Belmont, and San Carlos are cities that I had typically just driven past, going from Mountain View to SF and vice versa. Kind of like “fly over states”.
Well that’s changing. Starting sometime next month, we’ll be renting in San Carlos. Needless to say, this dramatically increases my commute:
- 2000-2003: 2.4 miles (each way)
- 2003-2005: 2.8 miles
- 2005-2007: 4.3 miles
- 2007-: 13.8 miles
Now granted this is all peanuts compared to Dave Givens who commutes 186 each way from his house in Mariposa to Cisco in San Jose - spending 7 hours a day round trip in his car. (Apparently it takes 9 cups of coffee.) But still, it’s over 3x longer than my previous commute.
(And looking back at this previous post, given my new digs, it appears I’ll need a lightweight vacuum - which sort of rules out most Dysons.)
So far in the time I’ve spent in San Carlos’ downtown, I’m already missing Downtown Mountain View. Where do you eat?

There’s a decent little Indian place right on El Camino a couple blocks north (I think) of the turn into San Carlos’ downtown.
